Fleur
|
Monsieur Fleur, our guide through the world of Alegrķa, is
unreliable, unearthly and unpredictable. Carrying his
lighted scepter, he parades around humoring the
pretension of the flock of Old Birds who hover around him. He
can appear fun loving, but the beak-nosed,
hunch-backed Fleur is jealous, petty and angry. He is
rotten to the core yet elegantly dressed in a red velvet
coachman's jacket, black brimmed hat and jeweled vest
that barely covers his grotesquely protruding belly. Don't
mistake this humble man in disguise... he wants power.

The Old Birds
|
The nostalgic Old Birds observe the goings-on as though
they were still young and beautiful and the future was still theirs. They
admire their reflections in mirrorless frames, but are only empty shells,
shadows of their former selves. They are the old aristocracy, still
convinced of their power and beauty. But they are twisted, deformed and
ugly. They wear fanciful hats and hide behind their flamboyant costumes
in rich tones of mauve, green and gold, covered with lace, jewels and
embroidery.

Nymphs
|
The Nymphs are the jewels of Alegrķa. They bring light to where
there only exists a darkness. They are fiercly protected by the Strong Man.

Tamir/Little Tamir
During the Original North American Tour, Tamir and Little Tamir were known
as Comedian (played by Christian Racoux) and Little Comedian (Played
by Batjargal Batmunkh). When the show was restaged for the Beau Rivage resort
in Biloxi, Mississippi, Christian Racoux left and was replaced by Tamir
Erdenesaikhan, who continues to play the character. Since then the pair
have been known as Tamir and Little Tamir. Together they weave a little
humor through the saddness and dispair that is sometimes Alegrķa

The White/Black Singers
|
The White Singer is the storyteller who echoes in song everything she sees around her.
She sings of melancholy and despair, of joy and happiness. The Black Singer is the White
Singer's alter ego. While she too expresses in song the atmosphere of Alegrķa, there is
wickedness about her. She hides many secrets in her dark heart.

Clowns
|
The clowns are witnesses to the passing of centuries, the social commentators of
Alegrķa. The clowns reflect the eternal spirit of mankind. They are grounded and realistic,
telling little stories of everyday life where everyone is a hero, where anyone can fall in love
and suffer a broken heart. The clowns are visionaries, philosophers of absurdity. Endearing,
comical and child-like, they turn the world into a circus.
The three clowns of Alegría poignantly portray the issues of Love
and Love Lost ("SnowStorm"), friendship and folly ("Birds on a Wire",
and "The Shadow") and the Environment ("The Big Mess"). Their presence
is felt throughout the production as their humour heightens, lightens,
links or disrupts the artistic flow of the tale.
During the North American Tour and Japan, Alegría
was populated by destructive clowns with acts created by
Slava Polunin and featuring Dmitro Bogatirev, Yuri Medvedev and
Serguei Chachelev.
For the European and Beau Rivage engagements, the trio of clowns
changed to three of the most mischief causing clowns I've ever
seen. "Ay! Ay! Ay!" proclaimes one (Leonid Leikine), but they
each go through their whimsical manors and their hardships.
Besides Leonid Leikine, there's
Valery Keft, dressed in a purple suit, and Yuri Medvedev - who
is famous for performing Slava's snowstorm. The trio stick together
until the Asia/Pacific tour when Valery Keft and Leonid Leikine
take up shop at the pool in «O» These clowns performed
"Rain", which involves a lonely clown as he makes his way through
the rain to find the sun; "Balloon" is concerned with the
struggles between two individuals; and "Flowers" symbolizes
romance and friendship.
For the Asia/Pacific Itinerary, Yuri Medvedev returns with
the very emotional snowstorm performance. He is joined by
two other clowns: Vladimir Olshansky from the United States
and Nikolai Terentiev from Russia. These clowns also continue
to delight during the North American II Tour (2002) and are
seen on the DVD version of the show.
The clown trio today continues on the tradition of years past
with "Snowstorm" and "Birds on a Wire".
