Clown
Brian Le Petit
Brian Le Petit is Mystère's clown, and he, like all behind him,
run amok throughout the entire production. From the early seating antics
of leading people up on stage, to stealing their popcorn, to even embarrasing
them with a bra, Le Petit is sure to please. Even so, his antics during the
performance also are award winning. From his early spouts of "Hey, we can see
your lips moving" at the beginning, to the "Get a life" yelp, you never know what
he'll do. Brian Dewerst, who plays Le Petit, has been with Cirque for a long time --
he's been seen in Nouvelle Experience and as Old Taps in Alegria: Le Film.
He brings a sense of fun to Mystère. Here, see what I mean:
"Get a Life":
During the performance of Mystère, the machine lowers the stage and fog
surrounds it. Then, out of the blue, a ladder appears and some shuffling
below. Then we hear, "Hey! You can't go up there. We have a show--they're's
a show going on!" And out pops Le Petit. The stagehands try and chase him but
he quickly kicks over the ladder, sending those who were behind him tumbling back
to the understage. He then utters, "Get a Life" and pulls out a camera. He's going
to take our picture. "Could you... move over?" he says to those on the side and
we all chuckle. Since we can't move over, he's decided to try another route --
the quick pan! This attracts the attention of Moha-Samedi, who scolds him for
taking pictures in the theater when it's not allowed. Le Petit, who is quick
on his feet, says "I'll take a picture of you." Well, Moha-Samedi is gracious
and poses for the picture. "A little to the left..." says Le Petit and WHOOP!
Moha-Samedi falls into the Machine. Le Petit shruggs, bends over and centers
his camera into the fog filled machine and *Click* snaps a picture, and walks
off.
"Get Out!":
During one of his stints before us, Le Petit chases the Red Bird behind
stage after it has taken the loaf of bread offered to a spectator whom
he coerced and placed in this cage-like box. He plans on wooing the man's
wife in the audience with a picnic lunch. Well, Le Petit catches the bird and fights
with it. Before long, features fly and he returns with feathers adorned about his
mouth. Then, Moha-Samedi shows himself and Le Petit runs and takes the puppet from
him. "You can smoke now, if ya want to" he says as he holds it up. "And take all
the pictures you want." But this makes Moha-Samedi mad, and he yells at Le Petit:
"GET OUT!". The audience, of course, feels Le Petit's pain and awwws for him,
but this gets everyone in trouble. "EVERYONE GET OUT!" But he reassures us that
we won't have to leave. Instead, he dons a red clown nose and smiles. This, however,
does not lift his spirits, so Le Petit tries an immitation of Nixon (his famous
peace sign stance) then, mimics a mime. When this does nothing, Le Petit rushes out
into the audience and sits with someone, but Moha-Samedi is hot on his trail.
He returns the captured man to his wife, takes the man whom Petit sat with the
man's wife by the scruff of his jacket; takes Petit by the scruff of his coat
and hauls them both out of the theater.
